The technology for social media likewise isn’t evil. At the ITSMF conference late last year there was an entire lecture structured around the practical application of these technologies’s to support businesses and encourage efficiencies. Yammer is a perfect example of twitter style application being made to work to benefit the company. It provides colleagues who may be separated by location and time zone with the opportunity to share ideas, ask questions and provide feedback on proposed initiatives. There are also instances of this type of tool being used to replace the traditional Service Desk tools with extremely successful results as users had full transparency of issues and status of resolution.
Technology isn’t evil, but if people don’t embrace it and gain an understanding of how they can use it positively to achieve what they need to then it, then companies such as those mentioned are free to exploit it and tell ...    less

With regards to music, I am not limited to iTunes and have Spotify and other streaming applications downloaded to my devices (with the option to rotate some offline for when there is no signal). Books are simple to download, there are thousands available in the store for free including Homer, Shakespeare, Nietzsche and if you have a cloud (or even back up your devices as should be standard practice for anyone with a computer!) you won’t lose a thing. I travel an awful lot and having all of the tools I need to work and entertain myself on the commute (I have my magazine subscriptions also delivered directly to my iPad, as well as my books, TV shows and movies) at my finger tips makes it invaluable to me and many of the people I know. (For anyone who finds themselves in this situation, it’s also fantastic when babysitting children as it keeps t...    less

Geek Girl commented on Laura Chubb's blog entry: I must admit to having a chuckle as I read this as it was reminiscent of discussions past with my mother on why she still refuses to move away from VHS or to use email (or indeed a computer). These still make my head spin.
I won't try and make an argument against Apple, Google and Facebook being the Axis of evil, but I will say that whatever your views on the companies and the way in which they conduct their business, you need to separate the technology from how it’s used.
I will be the first to agree that a fart application holds little value or life enrichment, however to see that and other such pointless apps as the limit of the technology’s application is extremely uninformed.
My iPad means that I no longer need to carry my laptop and a large number of files between offices and meetings. When the phone system went down in the office I was able to dial into the call with our Texan counterparts over the Webex Application on my iPad and share out the presentation on the screen so everyone could follow. My co...  ...  more

I am conscious I have been rather remiss in my blogging duties over the festive season. What is it they say, only good girls keep diaries, geek girls are off having too much fun?   Over the last two weeks I have over indulged in every possible way! My flatmate was aghast at the box (yes, box...
